Read the poem “If” and memorize the stanza assigned to your group.

If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Read the following poem. Write a 1 paragraph interpretation of the 1st stanza of the poem and submit to the school email.

Caged Bird

BY MAYA ANGELOU
A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Finding the right educational environment for our children is one of our most important responsibilities as parents.  We invite you to discover the boundless opportunities awaiting your family at Louisiana New School Academy and I thank you for your interest.  Our educational philosophy and curriculum are deeply rooted in the belief that all children, no matter their background or circumstance, are valuable and teachable.  The achievement of our students and the exquisite relationships that develop in the course of life at Louisiana New School Academy are extraordinary gifts.

 Louisiana New School Academy encourages intellectual and academic growth, nurturing the moral, spiritual and physical development of each child.  As a result, our students are prepared for successful and meaningful lives with a global perspective in a rapidly changing world.  Education is most effective as an active partnership with parents, students, and faculty.  The development of the whole person requires relevant academic experiences, experience with and appreciation of the arts, and regular interaction with peers, faculty and community for a lifetime of pro-social fitness.  You will find all of this and more at Louisiana New School Academy.  Service to community and to a purpose greater than oneself is a hallmark of the Louisiana New School  experience.

Please join us for a visit and a conversation to explore your hopes and dreams for the ultimate educational experience for your children.  It will be our pleasure to welcome you to your school home…………………………………………………SOAR TO SUCCESS!

Warm regards,

Valeria Temple Thompson
